DNF! Is it ever ok to stop reading a book?

Is it ever ok to not finish a book…

The short answer is …Yes 100% its absolutely fine, I realise that others may have differing views but stick with me here.

Why would you spend your time reading something that you were not enjoying. You read because you enjoy it, because your getting something from it, escapism, entertainment, knowledge, because its a beautiful story so please don’t feel guilty for not completing a book that your not enjoying.

I have only consciously not finished one book. I tend to mostly subconsciously not finish books.

As I’m reading a book I may put it down to do something else and then just end up never picking it up again. Sounds like my house it littered with part finished books all over the place (its ok, I usually put them back on the bookcase).

The one book that I actively decided not to continue was ‘The Dome’ by Steven King, the reason I didn’t finish this book was due to frustration.

The reveal for me – as in why the dome was there was a complete let down and took away all of my motivation for finishing it (this occurred in the last 5%). I had been so wrapped up in the story. The intricacies of the community in the dome and the build of the issues within, of being cut off from the rest of the world but just felt utterly let down, to the point of clearly not even finishing the book.

However, I don’t feel guilty for not finishing it, The Dome doesn’t judge me from my bookcase – noone is going to hold it over my head. I moved on to other books that I have enjoyed, devoured, lost myself in.

The point being if you are not enjoying a book do not feel obligated to continue with it, no matter how far along you are – there are plenty of books in the world and if you think about it…quite limited time.

Feel free to try and change my mind!

  1. I agree completely. I usually try to finish a book even if I’m not enjoying it. Just incase the author redeems themselves at the last moment. However, there have been a few books I refuse to finish and that’s usually when it feels more like a chore than something I am doing for fun.
